Prof. Frank Stahnisch has come out with a new book: “Great Minds in Despair — The Forced Migration of German-Speaking Neuroscientists to North America, 1933 to 1989” (Montreal, PQ, Kingston, ON: McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2025):
Great Minds in Despair explores the forced migration of neuroscientists and biological psychiatrists from Nazi Germany during the 1930s–1940s. Many of these refugees settled in North America, significantly shaping neuroscience and related fields. The book follows the careers of around 400 German-speaking scientists between 1933 and 1989. It highlights their challenges, including cultural adaptation, relicensing, and integration into new scientific communities. Author Frank Stahnisch revises the “brain gain” narrative by focusing on the working conditions and social experiences of these academic refugees.:
Congratulations, Prof. Stahnisch!

Le professeur Frank Stahnisch vient de publier un nouvel ouvrage intitulé « Great Minds in Despair — The Forced Migration of German-Speaking Neuroscientists to North America, 1933 to 1989 » (Montréal, Québec, Kingston, Ontario : McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2025) :
